During the Chongzhen 崇禎 reign, he became Minister 尙書 of the Ministry of Rites 禮部 and entered into the Grand Secretariate 內閣, but he could not get along with Wen Tiren 溫體仁, the ranking grand secretary 內閣首輔, so he was dismissed. After the Rongli 永曆 emperor of the Southern Ming was established, he became the ranking grand secratary. But this time, he had disagreements with Zheng Zhilong 鄭芝龍, one of the most important military leaders of the Southern Ming. Eventually he left the court.
