  • 01.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a result of a research project of collecting relevant terms and information from the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty conducted by the National Institute of Korean History. The research aimed to prepare and utilize the glossary as a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.
  • 02.Names of the participants in the research project and their affiliation at the time of the project are as follows.
    • -Kim Juwon (Dep. Linguistics, Seoul National University), Yurn Gyudong (Yonsei University Institute of Humanities),
      Kang Eunji (Institute of Latin American Studies, Seoul National University), and Lee Hun (Korea University)
  • 03.The Romanization of personal names is based on the original pronunciation of the name. If it is difficult to determine the original pronunciation only with the Chinese characters of the name, it was estimated as close to the original pronunciation as possible.
  • 04.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong. It does not mean an official interpretation of the Veritable Records of King Sejong by the National Institute of Korean History. In addition, it is not complete because it only presents the most relevant information gathered from the translation process so far. If more accurate information is collected from the subsequent translation process, the glossary will be revised after internal and external review.

Samja 舍音者 사음자 A Kolkan(骨看) who lived in 草串. The son of Ni Asingga. The brother of Jugo. The nephew of Ni Ajingga (1455)
Sampa 森八 삼팔 A man under the Dong Guntu at 알목하. (1433)
Sampa 三波 삼파 An Odoli(斡朶里) who lived in 江內. The son of Dong Huhuri. The brother of Samha (1455)
Sampa 森波 삼파 Mid 15C, Dong Sorotemu's kin. a man who was about to be asked who plundered villages in Joseon and why. (1433-1440)
Samto 三音土 삼음토 An Orangkai(兀良哈) who lived in 甫靑浦. The son of So Sojingga. The nephew of Nuida, Gedu (1455)
Sanca 撒察 살찰 He is the strongest chieftain along with Mangga, and was appointed as the 자헌 대부 資憲大夫知中樞. He is also the elder brother of 忽非家. (1503-1523)
Sanci 斜隱致 사은치 A 指揮 sent by 亐云甫, the 指揮 of 兀他河衛, to dedicate local products to the King. (1439)
Sande 山德 산덕 A Joseon(朝鮮) woman who lived in 穩城 of 永安道. She was caught by Dogaca of Udige and gave birth to his son(1480, 1481)
Sandoga 舍隱都哈 사은도합 A younger brother of Nang Borhan who lived in 阿赤郞貴. (1459)
