  • 01.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a result of a research project of collecting relevant terms and information from the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty conducted by the National Institute of Korean History. The research aimed to prepare and utilize the glossary as a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.
  • 02.Names of the participants in the research project and their affiliation at the time of the project are as follows.
    • -Kim Juwon (Dep. Linguistics, Seoul National University), Yurn Gyudong (Yonsei University Institute of Humanities),
      Kang Eunji (Institute of Latin American Studies, Seoul National University), and Lee Hun (Korea University)
  • 03.The Romanization of personal names is based on the original pronunciation of the name. If it is difficult to determine the original pronunciation only with the Chinese characters of the name, it was estimated as close to the original pronunciation as possible.
  • 04.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong. It does not mean an official interpretation of the Veritable Records of King Sejong by the National Institute of Korean History. In addition, it is not complete because it only presents the most relevant information gathered from the translation process so far. If more accurate information is collected from the subsequent translation process, the glossary will be revised after internal and external review.

Sim Isiga 沈伊時哈 심이시합 A 都指揮 of 婆猪江 who was promoted to a 萬戶. He wished to bring his son and attend the audience with the King. The grandchild of Sim Jararo (1483)
Sim Isima 沈伊時馬 심이시마 Mid 15C, a Ya-in(野人) who was appointed as a brigade vice commander(副萬戶) (1458)
Sim Jara 沈者羅 심자라 An Orangkai(兀良哈) who lived in early 15C(1424).
Sim Jarga 沈者兒哈 심자아합 Late 15C, an Orangkai of 建州衛who chased to catch 倪劉時, a captured Chinese. He threatened he could raid Joseon unless he got back the Chinese. (1483)
Sim Jihui 沈指揮 심지휘 A 指揮 of Orangkai(兀良哈) who made request for food, running short of it because of the invasion of 韃靼). (1424)
Sim Jujungge 沈諸衆巨 심제중거 A Ya-in(野人) who planned to pillage villages. (1499)
Sim Jungge 沈衆巨 심중거 A Ya-in(野人) (1525)
Sim Maito 沈賣土 심매토 Late 15C, a Ya-in(野人) who surrendered earlier than Sim Yerongga and became a king's guard. He is in the family of Sim Uroga and Dancuga. Sim Yerongga's nephew. (1483, 1484)
Sim Matoi 沈亇土伊 심마토이 A naturalized person who was sent to 建州衛 with Ni Geu. (1496)
Sim Onggi 沈吾應只 심오응지 He is the master of 劉時 who came to Joseon to search for 劉時. 劉時 is a Chinese who was enslaved by Ya-in(野人)s but escaped to Joseon. (1483)
