  • 01.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a result of a research project of collecting relevant terms and information from the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty conducted by the National Institute of Korean History. The research aimed to prepare and utilize the glossary as a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.
  • 02.Names of the participants in the research project and their affiliation at the time of the project are as follows.
    • -Kim Juwon (Dep. Linguistics, Seoul National University), Yurn Gyudong (Yonsei University Institute of Humanities),
      Kang Eunji (Institute of Latin American Studies, Seoul National University), and Lee Hun (Korea University)
  • 03.The Romanization of personal names is based on the original pronunciation of the name. If it is difficult to determine the original pronunciation only with the Chinese characters of the name, it was estimated as close to the original pronunciation as possible.
  • 04.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong. It does not mean an official interpretation of the Veritable Records of King Sejong by the National Institute of Korean History. In addition, it is not complete because it only presents the most relevant information gathered from the translation process so far. If more accurate information is collected from the subsequent translation process, the glossary will be revised after internal and external review.

Sengsangwairang 升尙臥伊郞 승상와이랑 A Ya-in who was promoted to a director
Sengsergui 鋤應鋤乙貴 서응서을귀 A cf. Nimaca who planned to pillage villages. (1555)
Senpau 先波右 선파우 Mid 15C, a Ya-in(野人) who reported the movements of 모련위 毛憐衛兀良哈 (1466)
Serangga 鋤良哈 서량합 Mid 15C, 해서 Ya-in(野人)(Haise野人) 都指揮. He would like to present local products but delayed because he was lost. (1466)
Serhoci 雪胡赤 설호치 He is the son of Ni Duri from 建州衛. He came to Joseon with his father and searched his runaway slave. He and his father were killed by that slave in Joseon. (1467)
