  • 01.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a result of a research project of collecting relevant terms and information from the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty conducted by the National Institute of Korean History. The research aimed to prepare and utilize the glossary as a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.
  • 02.Names of the participants in the research project and their affiliation at the time of the project are as follows.
    • -Kim Juwon (Dep. Linguistics, Seoul National University), Yurn Gyudong (Yonsei University Institute of Humanities),
      Kang Eunji (Institute of Latin American Studies, Seoul National University), and Lee Hun (Korea University)
  • 03.The Romanization of personal names is based on the original pronunciation of the name. If it is difficult to determine the original pronunciation only with the Chinese characters of the name, it was estimated as close to the original pronunciation as possible.
  • 04.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong. It does not mean an official interpretation of the Veritable Records of King Sejong by the National Institute of Korean History. In addition, it is not complete because it only presents the most relevant information gathered from the translation process so far. If more accurate information is collected from the subsequent translation process, the glossary will be revised after internal and external review.

Sano 私奴 사노 A brigade vice commander(副萬戶) of Ya-in(野人) who lived in 檢天. He was naturalized. (1395)
Sanok 山玉 산옥 A Kolkan(骨看) who lived in 江陽. The son of Ni Dayangga. The brother of Dosong (1455)
Sanpa 産捌 산팔 A Ya-in(野人) of 建州衛 who kidnapped and enslaved 牟斤重 for a while. (1467)
Sanro 山老 산로 Mid 15C, a Jurchen(女眞) who was laid in Naju(羅州) and brought back. a daughter of Gim Yemuna and Nao. a granddaughter of Yage
Santamu 散搭木 산탑목 A Ya-in who lived in 溫下衛 in late 15C(1499). He is one of the person who reported war(事變) and appointed to a military protector(護軍) and received imperial gifts(1460)
Santo 舍隱土 사은토 Mid 15C, Ya-in(野人) 指揮 who presented local products. He met the king and being bestowed goods. (1459)
Saoda 舍吾大 사오대 Late 15C, a 中樞 of Orangkai(兀良哈) who had an audience with the king and offered local products
Saodi 斜吾知 사오지 An Orangkai of 會寧 東良北 who stabbed Boman. He was exempted from his laboring punishment(도형), considering the naturalization of Ya-in(野人)s, and was only sentenced to being whipped(형장). (1439)
Saoga 沙吾可 사오가 The younger brother of Nang Sampa(Nang Sampa. (1457)
Saoha 沙吾下 사오하 Mid 15C, an Odoli who was captured by Nimaca Udige(尼麻車兀狄哈) but fled to 蒲州 with his family. (1465)
