  • 01.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a result of a research project of collecting relevant terms and information from the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty conducted by the National Institute of Korean History. The research aimed to prepare and utilize the glossary as a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.
  • 02.Names of the participants in the research project and their affiliation at the time of the project are as follows.
    • -Kim Juwon (Dep. Linguistics, Seoul National University), Yurn Gyudong (Yonsei University Institute of Humanities),
      Kang Eunji (Institute of Latin American Studies, Seoul National University), and Lee Hun (Korea University)
  • 03.The Romanization of personal names is based on the original pronunciation of the name. If it is difficult to determine the original pronunciation only with the Chinese characters of the name, it was estimated as close to the original pronunciation as possible.
  • 04.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong. It does not mean an official interpretation of the Veritable Records of King Sejong by the National Institute of Korean History. In addition, it is not complete because it only presents the most relevant information gathered from the translation process so far. If more accurate information is collected from the subsequent translation process, the glossary will be revised after internal and external review.

Satamu 撤塔木 철탑목 A Jurchen who served as a senior military protector(上護軍) and presented local products to the king in late 15C(1494)
Sato 舍土 사토 An Orangkai(兀良哈) who lived in 江外愁州 (1455)
Satoga 斜土哈 사토합 A 百戶 of Orangkai. (1425)
Sausu 斜亐愁 사우수 Mid 15C, a Ya-in(野人) who had lived in Masangga下 surrendered. He wanted to live in Joseon. (1460)
Sawang 斜王 사왕 A 千戶 and was sent by Ni Gonaga as an envoy. (1467)
Sayangga 沙陽介 사양개 1 A Ya-in(野人) (1441) 2 A Ya-in(野人) who lives under the 高嶺鎭 (1486)
Sayangga 沙陽可 사양가 An Odoli(斡朶里) (1466)
