  • 01.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a result of a research project of collecting relevant terms and information from the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty conducted by the National Institute of Korean History. The research aimed to prepare and utilize the glossary as a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.
  • 02.Names of the participants in the research project and their affiliation at the time of the project are as follows.
    • -Kim Juwon (Dep. Linguistics, Seoul National University), Yurn Gyudong (Yonsei University Institute of Humanities),
      Kang Eunji (Institute of Latin American Studies, Seoul National University), and Lee Hun (Korea University)
  • 03.The Romanization of personal names is based on the original pronunciation of the name. If it is difficult to determine the original pronunciation only with the Chinese characters of the name, it was estimated as close to the original pronunciation as possible.
  • 04.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong. It does not mean an official interpretation of the Veritable Records of King Sejong by the National Institute of Korean History. In addition, it is not complete because it only presents the most relevant information gathered from the translation process so far. If more accurate information is collected from the subsequent translation process, the glossary will be revised after internal and external review.

Jarda 者乙多 자을다 A commander(指揮) of Orangkai(兀良哈) who lived in Belin. (1455)
Jardo 者乙道 자을도 A Jurchen(女眞) who lived in 下訓春.(1455)
Jargi 者乙只 자을지 An Udige who used to be the master of 金孝進. 金孝進, the 昌城府吏, was captured and enslaved by the Udiges but escaped. (1467)
Jargosa 者乙古舍 자을고사 An enemy general and made a camp in 家洪 village which was 50里 away from 穩城.(1605)
Jari 者里 자리 1. Early 15C, a Hulun 指揮同知 of 塔河衛. He offered local products. 2. Mid 15C, a Nimaca Udige(尼麻車兀狄哈) 中樞 who lived in 朴加別羅. He sacked Joseon. 3. Mid 15C, Hulun Udige(兀狄哈) a military protector(護軍) who offered local products
Jariga 者里介 자리개 A brigade vice commander(副萬戶) of Orangkai(兀良哈) who lived in Hesangashya (1455)
Jariga 者里加 자리가 A commander(指揮) of Orangkai(兀良哈) who lived in 中東良. (1455)
Jariga 者里可 자리가 A Jurchen(女眞) who lived in 會伊春. The son of Gim Jurongga. The brother of Bisangga, Soroga. The cousin of Gim Somangga (1443)
Jaro 者老 자로 Early 17C, A Ya-in(商胡) who said he came to Joseon with Orangkai merchants to trade things from 瀋陽. Then he sacked villages in Joseon
