  • 01.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a result of a research project of collecting relevant terms and information from the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty conducted by the National Institute of Korean History. The research aimed to prepare and utilize the glossary as a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.
  • 02.Names of the participants in the research project and their affiliation at the time of the project are as follows.
    • -Kim Juwon (Dep. Linguistics, Seoul National University), Yurn Gyudong (Yonsei University Institute of Humanities),
      Kang Eunji (Institute of Latin American Studies, Seoul National University), and Lee Hun (Korea University)
  • 03.The Romanization of personal names is based on the original pronunciation of the name. If it is difficult to determine the original pronunciation only with the Chinese characters of the name, it was estimated as close to the original pronunciation as possible.
  • 04.The Glossary of Mongolian, Jurchen, and Manchu Personal Names is a basic reference for the English translation project of the Veritable Records of King Sejong. It does not mean an official interpretation of the Veritable Records of King Sejong by the National Institute of Korean History. In addition, it is not complete because it only presents the most relevant information gathered from the translation process so far. If more accurate information is collected from the subsequent translation process, the glossary will be revised after internal and external review.

Arsi 阿兒失 아아실 She was one of the detainees who was sent to Beijing(北京) as a present by the order of the king. She brought to Beijing(北京) by Eseigyem(魚世謙) who served as a Yijochampan(吏曹參判). She was 40 at that time. She is the daughter of Liaodong(遼東)(了同). She is the wife of Ya-in Yaogawho lived in 東寧衛.
Arso 阿乙所 아을소 Late 15C, Nimaca Udige who stayed in Joseon without official permission. (1497)
Arsongga 阿乙送阿 아을송아 A Jurchen(胡人) who resided in 浦項, who was arrested by Nurhaci's army, but received an official document and was returned home. (1607)
Arsu 阿乙愁 아을수 1. a senior military protector(上護軍) of a Nimaca Udige (1460) 2. a 僉知 of Udige (1470)
Arta 阿乙他 아을타 A Jurchen(女眞) Orjenggi) Ya-in(野人)who was appointed as the 副萬戶 of 蒲州. (1456)
Artan 阿兒彈 아아탄 A 僉知 of Orangkai(兀良哈) living next to 小東良. (1482)
Artemu 阿兒帖木 아아첩목 He lived in Hamgildo(咸吉道) 伐引 which belong to 毛憐衛 and because of disturbence of Nang Borhan he moved to Manchachen(萬車遷) later(1461)
Artemu 阿乙加茂 아을가무 1. →Dong Artemu (1460) 2. →Ni Artemu (1482-1487) 3. A 中樞 of Ya-in early 16C(1526), further invistigation is needed to see if it’s the same person as Ni Artemu
Arto 阿乙吐 아을토 Late 15C, an Orangkai(兀良哈) who presented local products (1470-1471)
Artoha 阿乙吐下 아을토하 Mid 15C, a 司猛 of Udige(兀狄哈) who presented local products (1470)
