(1360-1424 CE; r. 1402-1424 CE). The third emperor of the Ming Dynasty and the fourth son of Ming Taizu (明太祖) Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋). Personal name Zhu Di (朱棣), reign era name Yongle (永樂). Originally created Prince of Yan (燕王), he successfully overthrew his nephew, the Jianwen Emperor, when the latter began purging his powerful uncles. During his reign, he moved the capital from Nanjing to Beijing, launched massive expdeditions led by eunuch Zheng He, and successfully secured the Northern and Southern border areas.
