Li Yuanji(李元吉, 603-626) was a son of the founding Emperor Gaozu of Tang(唐高祖) and Lady Dou(竇氏). In the intense rivalry between his older brothers; Li Jiancheng(李建成), the Crown Prince and Li Shimin(李世民), he sided with Li Jiancheng and often advocated drastic action against Li Shimin, including assassination. Li Yuanji(李元吉, 603-626), Prince Qi(齊王), was a son of the founding Emperor Gaozu of Tang(唐高祖) and Lady Dou(竇氏). In the intense rivalry that developed between his older brothers: Li Jiancheng(李建成) the Crown Prince and Li Shimin(李世民) the Prince of Qin(秦王), he sided with Li Jiancheng and often advocated drastic action against Li Shimin, including assassination. In 626, Li Shimin carried out a successful coup d’'etat at Xuanwu Gate(玄武門之,變), killing the heir-apparent and Li Yuanji. As his father refused to recognize Li Yuantong as his own, he was abandoned and later raised in Yang Jian(楊堅)' house. His relationship with Yang Jian(楊堅), Emperor Wen of Sui(隋文帝) led him to be promoted to higher official posts after the establishment of Sui.
