Originally a salt merchant, he accumulated wealth by smuggling between China and the Southeast Asian region. He became one of the chiefs of the so-called "Latter Period Japanese Pirates" based in the Zhoushan 舟山 Islands in Zhejiang 浙江 and the Gotō 五道 Islands in Japan.
