Wang Pi(王伾, ?-806) taught the Crown Prince Li Song(李誦), the future Emperor Shunzong(順宗), along with Wang Shuwen(王叔文), and became a close associate of the prince. When Shunzong came to the throne, he and Wang Shuwen were appointed to important positions and became main characters in the Yongzhen Reformation(永貞革新). However, the reformative movement was quelled by eunuchs. Eventually Shunzong was forced to abdicate the throne in favor of the Crown Prince, Xianzong(憲宗), and he and his colleagues were dismissed from the court.
