Emperor Gaozu(高祖, 566 – 635, r.617-626), personal name Li Yuan (李淵), was the founder of the Tang Dynasty. In 617, Li Yuan rebelled against Emperor Yang of Sui(隋煬帝) and subsequently captured Chang'an(長安). After Emperor Yang(煬帝) was assasinated, Li Yuan established the Tang Dynasty in 618. However, there were still a number of rebellious forces, and his second son, Li Shimin(李世民) made great contributions toward Tang's reunification of China. In 626, after Emperor Gaozu had installed his brother Li Jiancheng(李建成) as the crown prince, Li Shimin carried out a successful coup d'etat at the Xuanwu Gate(玄武門) killing the heir-apparent and his followers.
