Du You(杜佑, 735-812), a native of Capital commandery(京兆), was a prominent scholar, historian and chancellor of the Tang Dynasty. He served Emperor Dezong(德宗), Emperor Shunzong(順宗) and Emperor Xianzong(憲宗) as chancellor. He devoted thirty-six years to the compilation of the Historical Encyclopedia(通典). He was a descendant of Du Ruhui(杜如晦), one of the most celebrated chancellors of the Tang Dynasty. Later, he was sent to Shuchuan(蜀川) to defend it against Nan Zhao(南詔), but he failed to do so.
