Liu Zongyuan(柳宗元, 773-819) was an official and prominent writer of the Tang dynasty. He was one of only two Tang dynasty writers among the Eight Great Prose Masters of Tang and Song Periods(唐宋八大家). Born in Hedong(河東), he earned the jinshi(進士) degree. Although he rose very rapidly in the court at he begining of his career, he was soon demoted and exiled. He was a friend of Han Yu(韓愈), and one of the followers of the "ancient style" prose movement(古文運動), which emphasized clarity and utility over ornament in prose writing. | 류자후(柳子厚), 유종원(柳宗元) |
